Part-Time Fire Fighter

Job Summary: Fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency medical response within the City and Fire District.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Be familiar with all WFD rules, regulations, policies, and operating guidelines applicable to the efficient operation of the department.
• Attend and participate in WFD meetings and training sessions; meeting requirements to remain knowledgeable of WFD operations, and promote job performance.
• Appropriately wear all assigned protective clothing, and self-contained breathing apparatus, for their intended purpose. Report any irregularities or broken items immediately for repair and/or replacement to assigned officer.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency alarm calls to protect lives and property through the prevention and the extinguishment of fires.
• Perform emergency medical care when needed up to the level of training.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency alarm calls and properly perform all basic firefighting functions according to WFD training standards which may include, but not limited to the following:
• Select and properly operate the use of fire service tools and equipment.
• Raising and lowering of ladders; Climbing up and down ladders
• Use fire extinguishers
• Lay and connect fire hose
• Maneuver and direct water streams
• Ventilate burning structures
• Perform search and rescue operations
• Work to complete salvage and overhaul operations
• Assist in maintaining apparatus, equipment and tools in a clean and serviceable condition.
• Assist, as necessary, in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the fire station assigned to.
• Assist with, or conduct, fire inspections, and associated reports, as mandated by WFD, as needed.
• Monitors and communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communication center dispatchers, responders from other departments, law enforcement, and other WFD personnel.
• Implement emergency techniques when trapped or disoriented.
• Complete Emergency Reporting computer reports for all calls that have been responded to.
• Incorporate continuous quality improvement principles in daily activities.
• Wear issued uniforms at all times while on duty, unless otherwise directed by the Fire Chief.
• Maintain good interpersonal relationship with all members of WFD and citizens we serve.
• Participate in non-emergency activities as required and requested.
• Conduct oneself in mature, professional, and courteous manner at all times, both on and off duty.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A citizen of the United States.
• Valid Arkansas driver’s license with clean driving record for three years. License must be maintained while employed as a part-time firefighter.
• Basic Emergency Medical Responded (EMR) licensure through the State of Arkansas or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire date.
• No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving violence, weapons, or illegal drugs.
• Be able to maintain a high level of professionalism, attitude, appearance, and enthusiasm within the Department.
• The ability to successfully complete all training classes or programs assigned.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Needed:

• Knowledge of street and fire protection systems within the WFD first-due response area.
• Knowledge of basic first aid, including biennial CPR and (AED) certification.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs, including Office, Excel, and Outlook.
• Knowledge of Emergency Reporting, and how to complete reports for calls to service.
• Ability to learn and demonstrate a wide variety of firefighting and related duties and methods.
• Ability to work well with others and work as a team member under the supervision of an officer or senior firefighter.
• Ability to establish rapport and interact professionally, sensitively, and patiently with individuals of all ages and abilities.
• Ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
• Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and written correspondence.
• Ability to work and remain calm under stressful situations.
• Ability to achieve and maintain adequate level of fitness to perform essential functions of the job.

Additional Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, wet and dry, and may also include working after dark in emergency situations. The employee will be at risk for exposure to airborne, and bloodborne pathogens, performing duties while wearing heavy equipment, risk of electrical shock, conditions of poor ventilation, and non-weather related extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
